Ride home for Wednesday, 28 November

Spent the ride home trying to figure out where a loud squeaking was coming from on my bike. I suspected the front hub, and when I got home took a closer look. While I was spinning the wheel round I found out what it was... The reed sensor for my bike computer had got nudged closer to the magnet, and on every revolution it was making a loud chirping noise as the relay closed. Definitely a new one for me in the litany of weird bike noises!

Ride into work for Wednesday, 28 November

Rode in via Bedford for a visit to the physio, where the muppet of the day decided that (in a half-empty car park) he needed to park his car 6 inches away from my bike, which I'd locked to the railings. I had to lift my bike over his bumper to get it out, and was not unduly concerned when the pedals caught on his bumper and quite possibly scraped some paint away.

Ride into work for Tuesday, 27 November

As I rode out of my street and turned left I was hit by an enormous tailwind and rapidly reached 35km/hr going uphill with no effort at all. With the wind blowing so hard I figured out on the fly a route that would roughly follow the direction the wind was blowing, and (apart from a couple of places I had to double back on myself to get to a particular street or route) I had monster tailwinds almost all the way into work. It was, as the children of the Internet like to put it, "teh awesome".

Ride home for Monday, 26 November

Cloudy ride home, and I was wondering if I was going to make it home before the heavy rainfall promised by Environment Canada hit. I made it in time, but it looks like it's going to suck tomorrow.

It was icy up in Clayton Park, and I saw the muppet of the day as I walked my bike across the crosswalk in Lacewood. He slowed down approaching the crosswalk and waved at me to cross, but I could see ice in front of him that he was obviously ignoring. I stood and watched as his wheels locked up on the ice and he slid through the crosswalk...

Maintenance day

After cleaning the hybrid, I decided to true the front wheel off the mountain bike. Closer inspection revealed the real reason it wouldn't true... the rim was split! I disassembled the wheel and kept the spokes and nipples that were still in a half-decent condition, then took an old wheel I had kicking around, took each spoke individually out and cleaned and greased the nipple and threads, then put it back together and effectively rebuilt it from scratch. A rather long and involved process, but at least it didn't mean I had to buy a new wheel!

Building the wheel myself meant I could build a nice high tension wheel and make sure it was well tensioned with my tensiometer. I'm rather pleased that the wheel I built for the hybrid last winter has yet to need any truing at all, seeing as the wheel I had on there before had a habit of breaking spokes on a regular basis...

Ride for Saturday, 24 November

Down to the farmer's market for my weekly shopping. One of the stallholders looked at me after I bought some produce and said, "oooh, you look hungry, have this apple!"; just one of the reasons I'd rather shop there than at Sobeys.

Ride home for Thursday, 22 November

The muppets have a new trick, and three of them played it on me on the way home. It goes something like this:

1. See the cyclist ahead.
2. Overtake the cyclist.
3. Realise the destination is immediately on the right.
4. Stop in the middle of the road. For bonus points, don't indicate.
5. Look bemused when I stop and sit behind as I don't want to get another right hook.

So, instead of waiting behind me for, say, 5 seconds or so, the muppet ends up waiting 30 to 60 seconds (yes, a muppet sat in the road for a minute, I counted it off) while we sit in a Mexican standoff.

Apparently there were 5 motor vehicle crashes in Halifax this evening. I passed one at the intersection of Bayer's Road and Joseph Howe Drive. It looked like a driver was turning left and had tried to race against an oncoming furniture van and lost quite badly. There was a fire truck in attendance, along with an ambulance and police officers. All this blocked off pretty much whole of Bayer's Road going straight or turning right, backing it up quite considerably. I rode around all the stopped traffic then walked my bike across Joseph Howe on the pedestrian crossing lights. The roads were extremely quiet for the rest of the way home...

Ride into work for Thursday, 22 November

Muppet of the day struck as I was riding down Vernon towards Coburg. There was a car waiting to cross coming out of Watt Street on my left, and a car came up signalling left out of Watt on the right. Unfortunately the driver of the car coming out of the right didn't believe in stopping for oncoming traffic and pulled out right in front of me. I leaned on my horn and skidded to a stop. The driver stopped and just sat there and shrugged at me as I pointed at me eyes and suggested she use hers.

Another cyclist caught up with me waiting at Coburg; his comment was "what a fucking moron, eh?" - I was unable to add further to his precise and eloquent summary of the situation.

Ride home for Wednesday, 21 November

Today was one of the oddest rides home I've ever had. Every single light was either green, or changed to green as I approached it. I only had to slow at stop signs to see no traffic was coming and continue on, even at the junction of Bayers Road and Dublin, where I normally wait for at least a minute. Riding up the steep hill on Central I had a fairly stiff tailwind, and every driver gave me at least 3 feet of space.

I can only assume I was getting some karmic payback for something somewhere along the line...

Ride into work for Wednesday, 21 November

Rode into Bedford for a physio appointment. Muppet of the day hit on the way into work, I was riding along Oxford Street when I saw a minivan waiting to turn left out of Summit Street to head in the same direction as me. The driver stopped, waiting until I was passing Summit Street, then pulled out and came straight at me. I leaned on the horn and braked, she braked and continued coming at me, I booted the side of her van and she finally stopped - possibly because her kids in the back were screaming at her to stop. She then turned, said "oh..." and waved at me. I was sorely, sorely tempted to remove her passenger side window for her so she wouldn't have any further problems looking out of it.

Ride home for Monday, 19 November

Muppet of the day on the way home was the muppet who was obviously feeling demeaned by having to wait behind me to turn left from Dutch Village onto Central and displayed his displeasure by attempting to wheelspin as he went past. Unfortunately, even though he was in a relatively sizable car he was undone by the fact he was driving an automatic, with the result that I could hear his engine start to scream before the onboard computer finally decided to drop the clutch in and deliver a massive burst of power the driver was clearly not expecting, resulting in the driver veering madly across the road in front of me trying to control his vehicle.

I laughed.

Ride home for Thursday, 15 November

Went down to Ideal after work and took photos of some bikes. Ran into Doug while I was down there, he came in to get his brakes adjusted on his new bike. We rubbed our chins for a while and discussed the merits of various brake pads until Chris came over and said, "no, man, it just needs tightening more". I'm still sticking with my salmon Koolstops, though...

After I got my bike all sorted I met up with Doug again and we headed off to the first public meeting of the Halifax Cycling Coalition. This is a new coalition along the lines of the Vancouver Cycling Coalition (or will be, with any luck) that will advocate for cyclists in Halifax. The meeting was surprisingly well attended, and there were a lot of people I've never seen before so it was good to see it wasn't just the usual suspects! There were reps from Bicycle Nova Scotia and TRAX there, and they were both strongly in favour of what we were doing. The next step looks to be to set up as a non-profit organisation, and fortunately there were people there with experience in that area that volunteered to collate the necessary information.

After the meeting I headed off to see my friend who got hit walking through a crosswalk. Looking at the damage it looks like the gallon of paint he was carrying acted as a shock absorber and saved him from serious injury, but he's still in pain from the knee, hip, neck and jaw. We commiserated over the state of drivers in Halifax and agreed that the only solution was to kill them all and leave it to God to sort them out.

Humid and windy ride in, so much for the return of winter. Rode my mountain bike in and took it down to IdealBikes for a tuneup and checkover. Cold ride in, but at least the soggy ground on the fire trail had frozen over.

Had some bad news, a friend of mine was hit walking through a crosswalk. He's fine, by the sounds of it he's just got some whiplash and bruised muscles, but contrary to the news report it was a pickup truck that hit him. The driver got a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, so there's no argument possible about whose fault it was, at least. The muppets are (Still) everywhere.

Ride for Saturday, 10 November

Rode down to the Farmer's Market to do my weekly shop. Had a bit of a crappy start, after turning onto Vernon from Pepperell I felt my rear tyre deflate. While changing it I found the reason it had deflated was the tyre had worn so thin a small stone had managed to penetrate all the way through. I put a tyre boot on it and put the wheel back on and... found one of the brake arms was stuck. I was slightly puzzled by that as I'd only greased the brake bosses a few weeks ago, as a temporary measure I put it in a closer stop so the spring wouldn't have to return so far and the brake pad would stay off enough to get me going.

At the Farmer's Market I ran into several people - Steveo, Angela, Ken - which was nice, although being in a bit of a rush to get cleaned up and all my shopping done before the weather hit I didn't have as much chance to stop and talk as I would have liked.

I stopped off at IdealBikes on the way back and took off the brake arm to suddenly realise it wasn't the brake arm that was sticking, it was the divot that had worn in the pad that had done it. As a quick fix I swapped the pads over to get me home, then I headed out home and got back just before the snow started to hit (first snow of the year, only 5cm or so!)

I saw Dave riding by on the way home, it looked like he was heading down to the Farmer's Market as I was heading home. There were plenty of cyclists around today, which was a slight surprise given the temperature!

The ghost bike for Michael Brooker was painted this morning at 8am, I went along to pay my respects. Peter was there and together with Neskie did most of the heavy lifting. Peter was interviewed by Andre Forget, chief photographer of the Daily News. I also took a few pictures - in the background the huge amount of traffic can be seen. Peter also pointed out to me the start of the off-road bike path that had apparently been hurriedly surfaced recently - however it was all fenced off, and was only about 40 metres long, rendering it of somewhat limited value.

Ride for Saturday, 03 November

Went down to the Farmer's Market early to avoid the onslaught of Noel, did my shopping, and on my way back in a slightly unusual turn of events, I hit a car. I was heading along Morris Street towards the intersection with South Park Street and slowing down as the car in front of me was stopped when the car behind me decided to overtake me and stop right in front of me. Being loaded with 40lbs or so of groceries I was unable to stop in time, and had the option of either using the back of the car that had just overtaken me to absorb my excess speed through careful application of a boot, or to veer to the right in front of another car that was turning right ahead. Without any real sense of guilt I chose option (a) and was mildly surprised to see the car shift forward a little. The driver leapt out almost immediately, and upon my questioning him whether he was a sexually active soft toy demanded to see photo id. I refused, since I'm not obliged to show such information (97 para 3 of the NS MVA for those playing along at home), and he failed to ask me my name or address so I didn't volunteer them. He did, however, threaten to call the police, and I think he was somewhat surprised when I told him to go ahead:

"I'm going to call the police if you won't show me your id."

"Please do", I said.

"I mean it, I'm going to call the police. You hit me!"

"No, you overtook me and failed to give me enough room. Please call the police."

"You had a ton of room! If you won't show me id, I'm going to call the police!"

"No, you cut me off. Call the police or get the fuck off the road, I've had enough. Are you going to call the police?"

"I know my rights! You hit me! I'm going to call the police!"

Then, just as I thought I was going to have to call the police myself, a driver who had been behind us all coming up and was in the left hand lane got out of the car and shouted, "you cut him off! I saw you do it! It's all your fault!" - I was somewhat surprised at how vehement she was, almost as if she took it personally!

I thanked the driver as Mr Muppet shouted back, "he hit me! he had plenty of room! I'm going to call the police!"; the other driver again called back "you cut him off! You're at fault!"

I turned to Mr Muppet and said, "so, are you going to call the police or what?" He just stared at me, and got back in his car without saying another word. I thanked the other driver profusely and continued on my way. At least there's some drivers out there paying attention to what's going on around them!
